By Kathleen Hamilton

There are few places that are truly and quintessentially iconic. When one thinks of Hawaii, the active mind immediately conjures pictures of palm trees, coconut, hula girls, and lei, or whatever. Anyway, if you loved that stereotype, then maybe youll enjoy in checking out these Hawaii ocean paintings.

The exquisite land of Hawaii is just that, so beautiful and exquisite, that no doubt it excites and tingles that preternatural Artists Sense. You will not be hard put to find a spot in this paradise youll like, and then translate that picture into the immortal canvas. That this paradisiacal state has inspired numerous artists is not exactly news. However, that some artworks have come to be such cherished collectibles might be news to you.

Many points of interest present themselves when it comes to nonnative art. Its not as easy as limiting that to artwork produced at the other side of the globe. It can refer to even that of the Europeans that have arrived with Cook, a considerable subset of which were artists, who were set out to paint a picture of exotic lands, people, and landscapes away from Europes tamed shores.

Interestingly enough, one thing thats unique with the art world of Hawaii is the so called Volcano School. This is a composite of people who liked to paint no less than Hawaiis dramatically erupting volcanoes in both its diurnal and nocturnal glory. Well, you cant deny that an erupting volcano makes for a really good picture. This genre peaked between the 1880s and 90s, in which period the Mauna Loa and Kilauea were intermittently active.

Then again, if you are an art lover, you will be able to find scenic spots here that will inspire you and motivate you in your artistic endeavors. The openness and versatility of the culture are sure to keep you afloat since you will have nothing to be afraid or intimidated of. In Hawaii, there are all kinds of artisans, who create many kinds of unique artworks, who handle different styles, media, and techniques.

The point has gone on to be really long winding. However, the point in this whole matter is that the art here is complex and diverse. The styles to choose from are quite broad, comprehensive, and diverse. That reins in the true artists, who have already been able to find their styles and are also open to appreciate all others, not willing to be disheartened by it.

There are also the half breeds, or native art sprinkled with Western influences. Of course, this can be another technical consideration in itself. After all, when can one definitively say that something is Western or whatnot. An acceptable answer can be founded on the subject matter and styles. It varies, though, and more often than not, it is down on intuition.

Of course, you have certain key points to keep in mind. Some scholars have taken it upon themselves to really delineate the Hawaiian enterprise. In the broadest category, you have pre European, modernist, post modernist, and non native art. As you can perhaps guess, the first is attributed to the Polynesians who have long peopled the islands, from about 1000 to 2000 years ago. Theres also the European era, which was around the time when Captain Cook arrived with his crew.

Regardless of the definitional gray lines in what counts as Hawaiian artwork, the institution itself remains to be very much intact. Whatever you deem Hawaii to be, there is no denying that it is rich in culture and history, as well as in natural resources. One will really not run out of subject matters to paint and set on canvas.
