How To Become A Bluegrass Flatpicking Guitarist

By Ryan Snyder

Something that tends to be common among these types of guitar players is the fact that this style runs in their family in a way. A Bluegrass flatpicking guitarist will usually have a father or mother who has played in this style, or at least an aunt or uncle. In some cases, this style has been in the family for generations, and they will have grandparents or even great-grandparents who played this way.

When someone plays the guitar in this style and genre, it is often true that they can play a few other stringed instruments as well, since there are a number of other ones that are quite popular in this genre. Some of the ones that you will most commonly see are the mandolin, the banjo, and even the bass, the latter sometimes being an upright bass, which is much more difficult to play than electric ones. There are some who can even play the drums too, something that's a huge asset for many players.

Nothing is better to help people improve their own playing skills than by listening to other great guitar players. These individuals have been playing and practicing sometimes for their whole lives, and so there is so much to be learned from them. If you put them on the stereo and listen to them carefully, it is like having them as your own personal mentors.

Sometimes a person is trying to find members for their band. If you want a particular kind of guitar player, you should be very clear about this. Otherwise, you might get the wrong types of players trying out.

It is great to read lists of the greatest flatpicking guitar players, but these shouldn't be taken for gospel. These lists are made from people's opinions and nothing more. The only way to know your favorite guitar player is to listen and judge for yourself.

The name of this style throws a lot of people off from the very beginning, and might make them not want to go any further. In bluegrass, people fingerpick quite often. That is why playing with a pick is given this special name in this genre.

There is a good reason why musicians who have been around and playing for the longest are often the best ones out there. It is because they have had so many years of practice under their belt, and they have the skills and techniques that lesser players can only dream of. They are also well versed in the different styles that are out there.

It is essential that you never give up when you are trying to learn the skills necessary to play like a professional. People might have a hard time with different steps in the process, but it can be a comfort to know that even the best players had these same issues at one point. The difference between them and everyone else is that they didn't give up, rather they kept pushing forward and trying their best.
