Preparations When Joining Dance Competitions

By Raymond Morgan

People like dancing as a hobby at first but would gradually become passionate more on it and wants it to become their profession. Most people start attending lessons and workshops which teaches a specific type of dance at a very young age. This helps them become more skillful and in gaining more confidence with their performing abilities.

Another part of becoming a dancer is competing with others which could be done with a group or individual depending on that event. Many dance competitions in New Jersey are being held which you could join to try being among the best dancers. Here are some basic preparation tips for the coming contest that you and your teammates can do.

Joining these competitions will let you experience the different types of emotions which a person could feel aside from being a physically exhausting activity. Emotional and mental preparation is needed due to these things. You might feel happy in competing, disappointed when making mistakes, nervous before the routine and even during and after it and either sadness or joy depending on the result.

Remember to keep your chill, take your time and think straight when preparing before you dance. Check if all things are ready which includes every piece of the costume you have to wear and the accessories needed. Doing this helps you relax knowing you did not forget anything important for the contest which prevents experiencing additional stress specially when something has been forgotten.

Determine how you spend the time right before your turn to dance because every dancer has different ways in handling their jitters. Some may meditate silently and calmly to relax their minds to keep positive thoughts and push away negative ones. Others get themselves excited and repeatedly review their routine or others just talk with each other while waiting.

Find out the way your teammates handle their nervousness because they may not be the same with yours. Stay away from those who meditate for mind relaxation if you like getting yourself excited. Do not forget your warm up exercises and let everyone in the team perform them because this helps in getting your body prepared in dancing on stage.

Confidently walk towards your position up the stage and the presence of judges must be respectfully acknowledged. Take deep breaths in helping you relax and be calm and in getting all the needed oxygen which is very essential. Even though these judges are tasked in scoring your routine, remember that they want also to get entertained.

Keep your mind when the performance has started on your routine and do not rush your steps. Mistakes may happen if you get distracted so focus on the choreography. Use every body part in executing the routine, which includes your facial expression and head movement, and let your energy and love in dancing be felt by everyone.

Keep smiling when leaving the stage even when you performed badly or greatly with the dance. Congratulate teammates for the performance which you practiced for a number of days and be grateful for the chance to compete. Accept the results and start preparing for the next competition.
