By Freida Michael

Your child is about to celebrate a milestone and he can hardly wait for the event that you are going to plan. You know he wants a pirate birthday party NJ style and you will do anything within your power to make it the most spectacular gathering ever. Middletown, NJ, has many venues that will have just what you need to throw a spectacular event.

The only problem is that you don't quite know where to begin. There is so much to consider. Decorations, door prizes, goody bags, games, crafts, food, and invitations are just a few things on your long list to consider. This theme is so intriguing and you can't wait to begin the preparations.

You should start with selecting or making the perfect invitations. They can be ready-made or you can make your own. These will greatly depend on your time, budget, and your creativity. Select or craft the ones that suit the age of your guest of honor. Utilize a vintage map or ship design. You could even use the map theme to design an intricate old-style map to the party venue or your home.

Be sure to choose the perfect costume for your little one. It could include a hat, pirate hook, eye patch, short breeches, and even a colorful parrot on his shoulder. Ask all the guests to come dressed in their own themed attire.

Decorating the event area will be your biggest challenge. This will depend greatly on our budget, the space you have to use, and your creative abilities. Ask for assistance from other mothers who may have done similar parties. They may even have props and other decor that you could borrow for the day. The centerpieces for the guest tables could be as simple as ships or treasure chests. Fill them with candy and trinkets and surround with mini telescopes, maps, flags and banners for extra impact.

The games you arrange for the guests could include a fun treasure hunt where each participant or team is given a map to hidden treasures. The clues will lead them to the fantastic prizes that you have selected just for them. For crafting, have them assemble hats from colorful paper or captain's hooks from large plastic cups and aluminum foil. A parrot pinata would make a great finale.

The cake could resemble a ship or a treasure chest. Cupcakes would be a fun alternative with skull and cross-bone, ship, and anchor designs on them. Cut and hollow out a large watermelon into a the shape of a ship, add fresh fruit such as melons and grapes, and add masts and flags, for a healthy snack alternative. Goody bags are the best part. Have them ready to hand out to the guests as they leave. Gold foil-wrapped chocolates and trinkets could be placed in miniature treasure chests or tiny plastic ships to carry on the theme of the gathering.

Take pictures of this event so it will be remembered for years. A party such as this will have you really wondering how you are going to top this next year. On the plus side, you will be better equipped and more knowledgeable about throwing a fun and creative children's party.
