Film Crew Jobs Described For You

By Sally Delacruz

Production of films is a very long process that involves a lot of manpower. A lot of film crew jobs are, therefore, available for grabs in so many companies. The crew is not the same as the cast. The cast is made up of people who stand in front of the camera to enact events in the storyline of the movie. In audio productions, they provide their voices. Producers are not categorized as being members of this team; most of them are owners of the companies or own the intellectual property of their films.

Crews are composed of many departments that perform different jobs. The job description of each of these departments has been evolving with the passage of time. What used to be done a decade ago by one member of a department is not done today by somebody in the same position.

Three sections which complement one another are the major elements in producing moving pictures. These sections are the post-production phase, the principal image shooting and the pre-production sessions. Every event in shooting a movie is associated with one of these 3 areas. It is equally common to divide the crew into two groups; the above the line and below the line crews.

A director in filming is not often regarded as a member of the departments in production. His/her core duties include overseeing the chronological flow of events in the plot. He/she issues instructions and arranges actors in the setting. In addition, his responsibilities entail choosing settings that are appropriate for all the scenes. He instructs camera people where to place their devices, and regulates the quantity of light required in each scene.

Another very crucial factor in this industry is production. A lot of people have never considered it as a department. They have, rather, always seen as a series of functional categories. This section is composed of the senior producer, the executive producer, the production manager, production coordinators and vice coordinators, a few assistant directors, accounting officers and location managers.

The production section is also made up of individuals known as line producers and vice producers. The former have the responsibility liaising with budgeting officers and the producing studio. They are referred to as a line producers due to their duties of lining up every material needed in producing a film. Production assistants help in handling general responsibilities in production.

The accounts department is also an important part in filming. Officers in this department are in charge of all financial matters. They ensure that every participant gets his/her salary, and all matters involving money are accomplished as per the budget. In Hollywood, there is a single accounting department that manages finances in all movies.

Another section of this team is the locations department. The head of this people is called a location manager. He/she is charged with the responsibility of looking for good settings for all scenes. He/she ensures that the settings are well prepared for actions. Junior members in this sector include the location scout, deputy location manager and location assistant among other members.

The final area to be discussed is the one charged with ensuring continuity. These individuals follow every occurrence in a keen manner to make sure that characters play their parts according to the plan. In case actors stray from the plan, they inform those responsible to take necessary actions.
