The Jobs of Movie Executives

By Robert Sylvan

Reflect on all of the times you go to the movie theaters, the times you have gone in your lifetime are probably countless. There are many people who are doing important jobs in the film industry. The next time you go see a movie in the theatres, check out the names in the opening credits. Some of the most important people on those credits are the executive producers and producers. Movies are funded and put together by these people; producers and executive producers fill a very important role in the making of movies. Sometimes there are a lot of people who are producers and executive producers in the movies.

The rights to the property, like the play or novel that the movie is based on, is given to the executive producer during the planning stage of the film. When the film needs to find investors, the executive producer is the right guy for the job; this is often the only main job of the executive producer. A line producer is usually hired by the executive producer to do the day to day activities involved in the film.

When it comes to the pre-production stage of the film, the only crew involved is the casting director and the executive producer. The next person to be added to the film crew is the costume designer. The costume designer is responsible for choosing the colors, fabrics, and sizes to all the costumes before they clothes are made.

The next person to join the crew is the director; once the director is added to the mix filming can begin. The look of the film and the performance of the actors is the director's main responsibility. The audience's impression of the film is in the director's hands.

The style of one director will vary widely from the style of another director. Some directors rely on imaginative improvisation. On the other hand, there are a few directors who choose to write out specific instructions that must be followed by everyone involved in any given shot. For a few gifted directors, the job of writer, producer, and director falls all on the same shoulders. Some directors choose to work in pairs; one will usually work as a cinematographer while the other does a lot of producing. When acting isn't quite enough, there are many actors out there today who act and direct all in the same film. When it comes to directors, the possibilities are endless; a director can take on any acting job or even film scoring if the need seems fit.

The roles of the director, the costume designer, the executive producer, and the other producers are extremely important to the making of any high budget film. When it comes to making or breaking a film, the responsibility of the films integrity falls on these executives.
