The Iconic And Famous Photographers In NYC

New York City is one of the most important and historic locations in the world for fine art photography. The famous photographers in NYC have pushed the medium onto new directions and created some of the world's most iconic images. These photographers include, Diane Arbus, William, Klein, Steven Klein, Garry Winogrand, Nan Goldin and Joel Meyerowitz.

William Klein was a photo-journalist and fashion photographer that created iconic images from the 1950s onwards. He is known for his unusual and ironic style. Often using motion blur and natural light to amazing effect. He rose to fame when he worked as a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine and also produced photographic essays of American cities. His style often broke conventional photographic rules, which created some truly iconic compositions.

Nan Goldin is one the most famous female photographers in the world. She is known for her hard-hitting grunge style. She began photographing the emerging punk scene in New york during the 1970s before documenting the lives of the gay communities of the Bowery area of New York. She was personally involves with her subjects and her snap-shot aesthetic created some dark and disturbing images. Her most famous work titled "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" has been highly influential in photography, film-making, music and many other mediums.

The fashion photographer Steven Klein is also based in New York. He is famous for producing surreal high-profile fashion images in the 1980s for Vogue, Arena and ID magazine. His photographs influenced many other mediums and he has photographed Brad Pit, Madonna and Tom Ford.

Garry Winogrand is a New York street photographer who photographed in 35mm black and white. His photographs were a dark and disturbing portrait of America in the mid 20th century. His photography depicted the social issues of the 1960s and has since become an iconic name in street photography. He used to prowl the streets of New York with his Leica and rapidly take thousands of pictures, many of which became iconic.

Joel Meyerowitz was one of the first photographers to shoot in color. Previously color photography was not considered art, bet he believed that color provided more clarity and realism for his subjects. A street photographer he roamed the streets of New York capturing the decisive moment that described New York of the 70s. He also shoots in large format and was the only photographer allowed into Ground Zero to document the aftermath of 9/11.

Joel Meyerowitz is a New York based street photographer who was an early pioneer of color film. He began shooting his iconic treat photography with his Leica and color film in the 1960s when color film was not considered an artistic medium for photography. He was the first photographer to have a color exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He also works with 8x10 large format film, and was the only photographer to be able to document the aftermath of 9/11.

The City is the perfect city for enjoying photographic exhibitions from famous photographers in NYC, especially at the Museum of Modern Art that has a section dedicated to photography as fine art. All the above photographers were very important for pushing the medium into the area of fine art with their iconic photography.
