3 Quotes From Edison For Music Producers

By Frank Lubsey

Many people today underestimate just how much work goes into the studio and creative process because they only see the final product. They download the song on iTunes or watch the music video and assume that it is fairly fun and easy to make a song. However, the reality of the creative process is quite different. Today, we're going to look at one of mankind's most creative minds, Thomas Edison, and hear a few of his thoughts on creativity.

For those that do not know, Edison was a brilliant inventor that had over 1,000 patents in his lifetime including the phonograph (an old school record player) and the light bulb. His inventions made the recording industry possible. Here are a few of his famous quotes.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Anyone who has made a serious beat is probably familiar with this principle of trial and error. Any serious beat maker has spent time searching through countless drum hits to find just the right one. Much of our job as beat makers involves experimenting with sounds to find the perfect one.

"Genius is one-percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." This quote really illustrates the creative process of a genius. It really is the hard work and effort that makes a song great instead of just innate ability. Of course, talent and ability are important, but it is the hard work and time that leads to success. For example, there was 99 mixes of Michael Jackson's song "Billie Jean", before the perfect mix was chosen and became the mix that we hear today.

"Discontent is the first necessity of progress." If you are discouraged because your music doesn't sound like you want it to, do not be discouraged. The frustration you feel is an energy that will force you to make improvements to your sound. Without this energy, you would have no impetus to change, and thus, your music would sound the same. Embrace this feeling of frustration, and let it propel you forward in your musical endeavors.

The laws of creativity are the same in every field. No matter what field you are in or how talented you are, creativity requires hard work and stamina. It is these two qualities that will separate bad beat makers from good ones and good ones from great ones. The next time you become discouraged, let these quotes from Edison motivate and inspire you.
