Model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra has been grabbing a lot of attention lately with his first on-screen appearance, Student of the Year, scheduled to release on the 19th of October 2012. Starring in Karan Johar's upcoming film along with Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, Malhotra who has had no previous experience in movies has been said to have found acting difficult, while his peers, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, both come from strong backgrounds in the film industry. With a star-packed cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, the director set a budget of above Rs. 40 crore. Shot in the United States and the United Kingdom, the film includes extravagant sets and expensive designer wear and was one of the most expensive movies made at that time. Produced by Yash Johar, the film went on to win five FilmFare Awards.

Also, the forthcoming movie will be Karan Johar's first without Shah Rukh Khan. Instead, the movie will star three newcomers, all featuring on the big screen for the first time including Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The fact that the film packs no superstars could be one of the reasons Johar has decided to keep this movie short. On previous account, films produced by the director under the Dharma Productions banner have been crafted short, though Karan Johar himself has never directed a film this short.

Staying true to his other ventures, Karan has spent lavishly on his upcoming Student of the Year, which is sort of a gamble as its stars three new comers. The film includes glamorous sets with most of the scenes shot at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

Karan Johar's Student of the Year will see Siddharth Malhotra play the role of Abhimanyu, a student at St. Teresa's High School, Dehradun, who enters a competition with Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) and Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) as opponents.
