Social Issues Faced By Children Of Mentally Ill Parents

By Nichole Cunningham

There are many problems that are faced by children of mentally ill parents and these often impact on them negatively. As such, they may not be able to lead a normal life like other people. However, there are certain steps that can be taken in order to deal with this particular problem in any given society.

The major problem faced by such people is related to lack of things such as shelter, education as well as food given that the fathers or mothers are not able to provide for them due to their mental condition. The fathers or mothers with mental problems also need to be cared for on account of their condition that may be delicate which results in children failing to enjoy parental care which is essential for their development.

People with mental health care problems as well as their kids are treated with low esteem other people in the society as a result of many factors. The fact that these kids lack parental care results in them appearing shabby due to lack of proper clothing. As a result, they are ill treated by other people in their respective communities.

Such people are often seen as outcasts in society as a result of the degree of their poverty given that they have no one to look after them. They feel alienated and this negatively impacts on their social development. It may be difficult for them to properly fit in the society as a result of this treatment which may be traumatic to them. In turn this kind of treatment can also affect their mind even if they are normal.

However, certain measures can be taken by various people as well as organizations in order to improve the welfare of such children. For instance, charity organizations can take a leading role in providing basic needs such as clothing, food as well as educational requirements for such kids who have fathers of mothers with mental health problems. It may also be necessary for such organizations to care for the kids if they are still very young.

It is also important to educate all members of the society to learn to treat others as equal regardless of their social backgrounds. It is not intentional to have a parent who has a mental health problem therefore such kids deserve to be fairly treated by every person in the society.

The members of different societies should strive to treat less privileged kids with respect. Inability to do so may result in such kids feeling as social misfits and they may not be able to develop to fit in their respective societies. This may also be problematic since such people may not be in a position to meaningfully contribute to the development of the society as they are subjected to bad treatment.

People have a tendency of treating kids who have guardians with mental sickness with scorn as a result of different reasons. However, this negatively impact on such people such that they end up failing to enjoy a normal upbringing like other kids. Basically, children of mentally ill parents are subjected to different types of treatment and concerted efforts have to be taken in order to address this problem in different societies.
