Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Why Should Martial Artists Have This DVD?

By Nikita Ray

The year 1974 saw the release of four short books that provided the basic principles of Jeet Kune Do, the martial art form that Bruce Lee invented. In the present standards, these books would be deemed general, but at the time of their publication, they were viewed as innovative books. A couple of these books, Self-Defense and Basic Training, are the basis of the Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: The Complete Edition DVD. The DVD has two of his original students Richard Bustillo and the late Ted Wong and it does a nice job of conveying the main material of the two books in a visual manner.

While reading the books is highly recommended since they have a whole lot value to offer, still images in a book do not always do justice as far as being able to effectively detail the techniques being taught. Static photos only reveal so much and moving images are much more effective. As a result, the book's DVD edition is extremely beneficial. With the DVD, you can familiarize yourself with the techniques taught in the book since you can watch Bruce Lee's original students demonstrate the different techniques. While you cannot really expect to become a Jeet Kune Do master by merely watching the DVD, you do end up with an excellent resource you have access to anytime so you can supplement your attempts at mastering the martial art style.

Warm-ups and easy exercises are covered in the DVD's Basic Training. Using these you can get the most from your sessions. The basic fundamentals of Bruce Lee's art are also presented in this part so you will learn the fighting stance (the On-Guard) position, footwork, and basic offense and defense. Basically, you can consider this as an introduction to Jeet Kune Do. On the other hand, the Self Defense section of the DVD addresses common Jeet Kune Do defensive and offensive moves that are particularly useful when you face a hostile assailant or you find yourself attacked on the streets. Those interested in quite a few simple moves created to apply Bruce Lee's art in a self-defense scenario will find this section to be interesting.

One other positive factor of the DVD is the superb narration present on it. The voice over narration clearly defines what's taking place on the DVD and you will not feel you have missed out on anything when you listen to it while you watch the DVD. The production values are quite good. A lot of training videos on martial arts are made so terribly. As this DVD was created by Black Belt Magazine, the production budget was over what you'll commonly see in the more amateurish video releases. There are those who think production values are not really that crucial. Nevertheless, a terribly produced instructional video will not really be able to meet its main goal, which is to effectively instruct its students. The video and sound quality of this video is top-notch. You won't need to worry about it undermining the material's presentation.

If you happen to be a serious martial artist, make sure that you've got Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: The Complete Edition DVD on your shelf. It is a must-have classic training video. The DVD has great insights into Jeet Kune Do, the martial art that Bruce Lee invented. Furthermore, you are going to learn numerous basic self-defense moves.
