Ideas For Finding New Music

By Matt Slovak

Many people enjoy music for many different reasons. Some are so passionate about music that they dedicate their life to studying, performing, or working in the music industry. The music industry is a very lucrative industry where creative minds can really thrive. There are also big changes coming to the industry as technology improves. This disrupts some companies' business models and causes others to flourish. Despite all of the changes happening in the industry, new music is more accessible than ever. Technology has made it easy to search for and spread new music around.

The internet has more websites, apps, and software for music discovery than ever before. With so many options to choose from, such as Pandora, Spotify, Youtube, Myspace, and Reverb Nation, the key is to pick one and use it for a few days in order to get as much value as you can from it. Don't forget that you can also use search engines to look up keywords. When discovering new artists, you would want to search terms like "local bands", "bands like (insert a band)", or "new acoustic music". Sometimes you may want to go beyond the first page in the search results to find those hidden gems that are not quite famous yet.

Some email providers such as Gmail will allow you to set up email alerts. Alerts can be set up so that any time a particular keyword or phrase is mentioned on a website or news sites, an email will be sent to you. These can be configured to send you an email once per day or once per week. You can input keywords such as "Los Angeles bands" or "new ska band" and your alerts will pick the best news about those topics and send you what almost looks like a news letter.

Youtube can be a great asset when it comes to the discovery of music. Not only can you search for limitless keywords and bands, but the browse function is easy to use as well. The browse function will allow you to look up the most watched videos on Youtube. This list can be broken down by genre or left broad to include all music videos. Sometimes the genres will not be completely accurate and may show a band in the alternative section that should probably be in pop, but it does a good job at showing you a wide range of new artists.

By using all of the resources available, you should be able to find plenty of music. Keep exploring new genres and sounds and you will enrich your life with loads of listening pleasure.
