Sheffield, the city of Steel, has been the birth place and home town of many famous people throughout history, both past and present.

As many people may already know, MP and Labour politician David Blunkett is a Sheffield lad through and through. Blunkett was born blind to a poor family in one of Sheffield's deprived areas, and worked his way up to becoming the Education and Employment Secretary, Home Secretary and Work and Pensions Secretary in the Labour cabinet under former Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1997.

Many people will have heard of former professional boxer turned boxing trainer Brendan Ingle. While living in Wincobank, Sheffield, Brendan was approached and asked to help do something about the unruly youths in the area. He opened his boxing gym St Thomas' Boys & Girls Club, and has never looked back. He has trained such greats as Prince Naseem, Clinton Woods and is current trainer for Junior Witter, Kell Brooks and Richard Towers. Over his time as a boxing trainer he has trained 3 world champions, 6 European champions, 15 British champions and 6 Commonwealth champions, making him one of the most successful boxing trainers in the history of the sport.

The late Sir Robert Abbott Hadfield was a Sheffield born metallurgist, famous for his discovery of manganese steel and silicon steel, some of the first steel alloys in 1882. The University of Sheffield named a department of materials of science and engineering building the Sir Robert Hadfield Building in his honour. The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield has also named a wing after him.
