The Association between Bollywood and the Oscars

Bollywood and Hindi film industry are the same, where thousands of Hindi films are made annually. In India, Hindi movie industry churns out the maximum number of films. Some popular Hindi movies because of its rich concept have made its presence felt internationally by getting selected in the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

One will always remember Mother India because of its relevant content. It was Mehboob Khan who gave fresh faces to the characters of his earlier film Aurat (1940) and scripted this film. The movie depicting the social set up of old India has Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt, playing the main characters in the movie. The central character in this movie is a poor woman from the village with high moral values and a strong mind. Even then she murders her own son, at last, in order to keep her promise to the landlord. Oscar jury chose Mother India as one of the five movies to contest in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Mother India represented post independence India and was the 1st film to be selected in the Oscars.

Salaam Bombay! became the 2nd film to be selected from India at the Oscars among other films in Hindi film industry. Produced in the year 1988, this film depicted the lives of many street children from Bombay (now Mumbai). This film received various awards from international and national movie festivals. Golden Camera Award (Cannes Film Festival), Montreal World Film Festival and the National Film Award for the Best Feature film were some of the awards given for this film, directed by Mira Nair.

Lagaan, starring Amir Khan, Bollywood's one of the most popular actors, became the 3rd entry in the Academy Awards. The movie, released in 2001, depicted India under the British Raj in the Victorian age. Lagaan is about some villagers who stay together to fight the British Government for taxing them. The movie directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, with an investment of 250 million rupees also featured many British actors Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker within a huge investment (250 million rupees), this movie had some English movie actors too.

The 4th movie to be chosen for the Best Foreign Language Film category was Water by Deepa Mehta, who was born in India. The film shows India in 1938 and the traditional customs prevailed at that time. Featuring a few popular actors like Liza Ray, Raghubir Yadav, Vinay Pathak and John Abraham, this film evoked public interest.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's film Rang De Basanti featured several fun-loving college students and through them the present India. The movie brings forth the evolution of these college students from being passive to corrupt social system to challenging the rules by giving their lives. Young people in the country got influenced by this film, who were wanting the system to change. The movie became the official entry from India after facing a tough competition from other films.
